“OTHER STUFF” and “oh yeah” some training...

It has almost been two months since my last entry in this blog... I do say nothing much has been going on... Training has been slightly erratic... I have been desperately holding on to my planned sessions though “other stuff” has got in the way...

SKIING- What a week up in the French Alps in Morzine... Skiied my heart out... Not that good at the moment but I can handle blue runs and not to steep red runs nicely... Actually did some mogelly bits on the easy red runs... Anything more and I'm a complete mess... Did have a bit of fun skiing off piste as well as between the trees... Anyway a little seed has set in my mind... Simple... Improve!!!! A new aim in life... With this in mind I took a lesson with Xavier (French ski instructor).... He gave me a multitude of tips which I took and I improved slightly... It also gave me a new determination to get better at this caper... Roll on next year I say...

As for Xavier... Had a good old chat with him as we were going up the lifts... Oh what a life he leads!!! Ski instructor in the winter and Surf instructor on the Atlantic coast of France in the summer... I'm inspired!!! And he 's been living this way for nearly 30 years.... Somehow I've missed my vocation.....Why is the notion that a “proper job” so important???? Makes no sense... Good on you Xavier....

VIRUS- Boy did I get a beauty here... Some of you of the opposite gender will call it “Man Flu” I'll just call it the “39.3 flu”.... Crook as a dog I was... After about 3 days in bed and about 4 buckets of Lemsip I survived... Boy do I hate Lemsip now...

Now for my training... I'll break it up into the 3 disciplines... As I've said it has been very erratic...

Swimming- Can swim 2km non stop now nicely... Have chucked the schedule away and going to concentrate on technique... Going to attend novice training training sessions for this... Everything seems to go well except that my legs are dead weights... Improvement required here... A nice little challenge...

Cycling- Despite everything, going very well... Had a beaut cycle today to Kettlewell and back (about 50km) in under 2 hours feeling very comfortable...

Running- was spot on form before the “39.3”... Did 5 x1km sets about 2 weeks ago... All under 4 min and 10 sec... Target pace by the way... Ran about 10km easily last night at a gentle pace... Might just ease back into pacework next week...

Anyway it is about 5 weeks until the first event... lets hope all this training will hold me in good stead... I've been injury free which I'll take a bit of credit for through good planning... Lets hope this continues...  What I must do now is to recover well from my slight health setback...

Keep happy

Those 2 seconds.....

What a gruelling week.....

Monday – Rest

Tuesday – Gym and track running with Craven Energy...

Couldn't wait for Tuesday to arrive... Back to my strict regime of training... I must say I am quite enjoying all this work... Not the gym work though... By now you must be able to see this... It must be done though and admittedly it does help significantly... All I can say now is I wonder what this week would bring???

At this point I am very happy with both my running and cycling... They are both right on target.... Swimming needs a bit of work but I'm sure I'll get there soon... Anyway its Tuesday and it was off to the gym in the morning... 45 minutes later and I'm out... Fantastic... Got that out of the way...

Evening track with Craven Energy.... This session had no snow, no wind and no rain... A perfect night for training... The program for tonight was 5x1km sets at the same pace... My target pace being 4 min 10 sec for each kilometre...With the warm-ups and warm downs and recovery sets the total distance would be 9.6km... I ran nicely below the target on 4 of my 5 sets... The one above was only by 2 seconds... A great night... In fact a very positive night despite those 2 seconds.. It is somewhat interesting how I can be competitive against myself in the dying days of my fifth decade... There are many more like myself judging by the presence of many “older” people charging around the track... Some running amazingly fast... Great to see and most positive... The track is a great environment with people of all ages utilising it and no doubt gaining many benefits from it...

A little anecdote here... The two words “2 seconds”... Upsets me greatly... My best half marathon time (21.1 km) was 1 hour 40 min and 2 damn seconds set over 4 years ago... I've tackled a few “halfs” since, got very close but never broke the 1 hour 40 min barrier... That's sport though... I have some unfinished business with that distance... That is for the future though...

Wednesday - Cycle and Swim

Morning: Cycled 32 km early in the morning in crisp cold conditions... Anyway cycled to Utley via Skipton, Eastburn and Steeton... There is one totally uncontrollable factor along this route... The railway crossing near Kildwick... There are times when you can wait for up to 10 minutes as all the bells and lights are flashing with trains passing... Very annoying when you are cycling smoothly at a nice rate of knots... This morning was bliss I didn't have to stop and completed my out and back ride in 1 hour and 20 min... Pretty good...

Evening: Down to the pool for the customary dip... Had a simple workout tonight... Warmup... 500m catchup, 500m kick, 500m fists... Then a warm down... Total distance 1.8km... Very good... Job done...

Thursday – Gym and running with Keighley AC

Gym in the morning... Totally slack here.... I'll admit it... Yes I'm human... I didn't go the gym... Oh shock horror...Will it have an adverse affect on me?? Am I tempting fate somewhere here??? Doubt it... Just couldn't face the indoor sterile environment so I thought “Stuff It” and gave it a big miss... Forget it!!!...

Did an easy 6.5 km run in the evening with Keighley AC... Just a few hills doing Chinese relays... It was good fun and the relays were a good way to get everybody going... Also had a nice steady run from one side of Keighley back to the clubhouse... Made me feel good... Great night... The gym was well forgotten by now...

Friday – Cycle and swim

Morning: Brisk return 50km cycle from Skipton to Kettlewell passing through the villages of Cracoe and Threshfield along the way... Great conditions for it... A slight headwind on the way out made me work hard... Absolutely hammered back with the breeze behind me.. Brilliant stuff... I'm actually feeling quite strong on the bike at the moment... What an endorphin buzz!!! Loved it... Time: 1 hour 50 minutes...

Evening: Friday night swim..... An endurance swim... I'm building up slowly to the required distances at this point in time... Tonight's schedule was quite complicated... Total distance being 2100m... Anyway I thought to myself stuff the program...Come on Vic swim the required distance for the Olympic distance tri and the open water swim (1500m) now... So I swam a straight 1500m easily and topped it off with a 600m set (this distance being just short for a sprint tri)... So that made me feel very good... Walked out feeling very positive that night... Swim okay now, Bike going very well, Run pretty good... Everything on schedule...

Saturday – Gym and Run

If ever there was a record to be broken for gym work I reckon I would set it... Did my entire workout in 23 minutes... Did what I had to do and got out... My eternal theory for the place... Actually whilst on the treadmill the television was showing Scotland belt, thrash, hammer Italy in the six nations rugby... I wondered to myself how did the Italians beat France last week?? That was about the only interesting bit of the workout.....

Later that evening I ran about 8.3km total... Ran to a nearby hamlet (Halton East) and back with the head torch in the pitch black... Got into a nice stride, feeling very comfortable... A good run...

Little anecdote: I was striding along nicely when I heard in the dark what must have been heaps of ducks fly and land into a pond which was just over the dry stone wall... It was very close... I must have scared them... Must say it scared me a bit to hear the noise in all the blackness and then have to work out what was going on...Had Martians landed in Yorkshire or something... No harm done though... Oh the fun of night time activities...

Sunday – Cycle and Swim

This mornings cycle: Very cold, no wind but a light sleet/snow/rain to contend with... The snow didn't settle so it was more than safe to cycle... Anyway I set off at 6am and cycled about 75 km in total... Time: 3 hours and 5 minutes... The route I took was from Embsay doing a huge loop to Shipley via Skipton, Utley, Bingley etc... Once at Shipley I headed to Poole in Wharfedale via Menston then back via Otley, Ilkley and Addingham... There were the usual undulations along the route... There were also 2 long hills to charge up... Hollins Hill from just after Shipley and a long drag from Otley Roundabout on the A660 to the junction where you turn left to go to Poole in W... Did them both with ease...

Although the rain/sleet/snow was very light I got totally soaked and arrived home very cold and wet... Must say it was a challenge to get out and cycle the distance... It had to be done no matter what the weather was like and as long it was safe to do so... Sitting here now typing away I'm most pleased with my efforts this morning...

Afternoon swim: After the effort this morning I felt a few 100m efforts at the pool would more than suffice... Anyway I did 10 of these comfortably... The session was quite different as many members of the tri club were in attendance... A lot of socialising was done.. Very nice for a change... Even had about 20 minutes in the sauna..... Relax...

Anyway to sum up... What big week... I'm very weary and tired.. Luckily enough the week coming up is an easy one... So I'll cruise through and relax a bit....

Must forget though about those 2 damn seconds.....

Catchya next week...

               Beyond Blue                                                                                               Mind

Another weekly update...

Monday – Rest

Tuesday – Gym and track running with Craven Energy...

Goth through entire gym workout in the morning... Must say it was quite a struggle warming up with a walk on the treadmill... 10 minutes was an eternity...

Evening track with Craven Energy session was quite a challenge... All I can say is that it was very wet and windy... But with effort I prevailed... Did a pyramid set... 2000m jog warm up... Some dynamic stretching exercises... Then the following sets... 800m, 1200m, 1600m, 1200m, 800m...The aim being to hit consistent times for each lap within each set... All five sets punctuated with a 400m jog recovery... 800m warm down... Total distance about 10.2km... Nice to be back on the track after the snow... Lets hope next week it isn't as wet and windy...

Wednesday - Cycle and Swim

Cycled 40 km in very very wet and windy conditions... Must say it was very hard work.. Set off from Skipton and did a loop via Cracoe, Linton, Burnsall, Appletreewick, Bolton Abbey, Halton East, Embsay then back to Skipton...

Evening: I did my a swim session... Got through my sets nicely... Quite uneventful but good fun nevertheless... Total distance 1.8 km...

Thursday – Gym and running with Keighley AC

Gym in the morning... Slack again here.... 10 minute treadmill warmup was as hard as ever... Just did my legs... The main priority... Must say the gym work does help a lot despite the fact it is indoors and I'm not very keen on it at all...

Did an easy 8 km run in the evening with Keighley AC... Just a steady pace from Keighley with a magical mystery tour around Riddlesden... Nice and relaxing... Wasn't raining or windy and no snow to be seen at all... So quite pleasant...

Friday – Cycle and swim

Got out on the bike early this morning for a brisk return 50km cycle from Skipton to Kettlewell passing through the villages of Cracoe and Threshfield along the way... Some longish sunny patches and no wind or rain to contend with so it was a brilliant cycle... Feeling great...

Evening so its time for a swim... Felt quite tired but managed to get through my sets quite okay... The schedule included 2 sets of 700m of which I got through okay despite the tiredness... Total distance 1.8km...

Saturday – Gym and Run

Ran about 4km to the gym... Did my workout.... Ran 4km back... Pretty straightforward I guess... Legs felt tired and sore so I guess that was more than enough today...

Sunday – Cycle and Swim

Cycle was excellent... Very cold, a bit windy but no rain... Cycled 60km from Skipton to Colne and back via Steeton, Addingham and Bolton Abbey... Had a fabulous bit when tearing downhill from Cowling to Glusburn with the wind at my back... Absolutely flying down... Felt that if I had gone any faster I'd be testing Albert's theory of relativity... I was breaking the speed of sound though... Could here all these booms around me (sonic I guess)... Was it loud wind gusts though???

Must say there is heaps of mathematics and physics in all this training... No doubt as I get into it the training more I'll elaborate on the numeracy/physics aspects of it all... Now that will be interesting...

As for the swim I got through my planned 2.4km session nicely despite feeling quite weary... One part of the session was a straight 1000m... Did it... Most pleased...

Anyway that is it for this week... Tomorrow is a rest day then it is back to it all on Tuesday... Can't wait!!!!!

The Man From Snowy Yorkshire

                      Beyond Blue                                                                         Mind UK

As promised a weekly update of my training over the week...

Monday – Rest

Tuesday – Gym and track running with Craven Energy...

Well the snow scuttled my carefully set out plans for the track this week...

Anyway as gym work was also on the plan tonight I decided to make the most of the picturesque snowy scenery... I got my trail shoes and head torch on and jogged at a lovely easy pace to the gym taking a long detour through the Skipton Woods... It was great, jogging along in the snow with only the head torch showing the way... Actually very very nice for a change... As for the gym... I did my workout at my typical flat out pace.. Always keen to escape it I think... Jogged home... Not a bad night...

Wednesday - Cycle and Swim

Meant to get up early for a 30km cycle... Decided not to as there was snowy patches on the road and I'd surely crash... Anyway it a was swimming in the evening and I got through my regime nicely... Part of the regime I have is to swim with your fists... Now this is hard work... Apparently by swimming this way your arms get to “feel” the water and make your stroke more efficient... Anyway the regime said 2 x 250m fists only... This I did okay but I was glad to get though it and not be put up for assault for accidentally belting someone... Total distance 1.5km

Thursday – Gym and running with Keighley AC

Couldn't be bothered doing the whole gym workout tonight... Slack I must say... Just did my legs which is the main priority so I guess target achieved...

Running was fabulous... It was pretty straight forward... Start in Keighley... 2.5 km up a hill and down about 1.5km to Steeton... A jog around Airedale Hospital and back the way we came... Total... About 10km... Nice crisp cold evening for a run especially up high... Very enjoyable...

Friday – Cycle and swim

Did the cold bight hard or what today... I was dead keen to cycle but the weather was forecast to be -7 early on and I declared myself a whimp and awaited the evening swim... Unfortunately due to the heavy snow the pool was closed... A rest day was declared at 8pm... Boy did I hate this... My carefully planned week was beginning to fall apart... I wonder what Saturday would bring...

Saturday – Gym and Run

I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone today... Get to the gym... Run about 5km on the treadmill and do my workout... Anyway after 1.5km on the treadmill I got off... Running this way indoors is totally unnatural... In fact I hate it... A bad choice I must say... Decided to have a leisurely workout which was nice and sociable... But the week had a day to go... The snow was meant to go by the morning... Yeah!!!!!

Sunday – Cycle and Swim

Fantastic the snow was gone... Washed away by the overnight rain... So I got “kitted up” and cycled to Kettlewell and back... Return distance 50km... Only negative a passing motorist found a nice large puddle to soak me with... Must say it didn't hamper a good cycle... Swim afterwards was pretty standard without anything of note happening... Total distance: 1.5km...

So the week finished off pretty good... Thanks to Sunday... Looking forward to this weeks training...

Catchya soon... 13 weeks till the first event (Mallorca Olympic Triathlon)...

What else do you do in life?

                                          Beyond Blue                                  Mind UK

G'day and eh up to all who are reading this!

This is the big launch for 'Vic's 5 for 50'.  I thought at my age I'd make good use of  my body and do something positive to celebrate the approach of my 50th birthday.  As many of you who know me, I've been very sporty for most of my life and love a challenge.  I've decided to take up 5 challenges over 5 weeks to achieve personal goals and also to raise some funds for some very good charities and to celebrate the fact that I'm still alive and kicking.

This all started on the very first day of my holiday back in Australia in August 2012.  Myself and my two sons spent the first day in Melbourne and were fortunate enough to have tickets to see the Aussie Rules football match of Geelong vs Hawthorne at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Grounds).  At the time I was aware that Beyond Blue had a cup for that particular match between these teams.  As we walked from Federation Square towards the MCG with perfect timing the kookuburras laughed.  Ahhhhh and I'm home.

Surrounding the MCG all these people were in blue wigs.  Lo and behold it dawned on me it was the people - there were wristbands and an information tent.  Geelong went on to win the match in a spectacular way.  A goal after the siren.  We were lucky enough to meet many of the players and coaches after the match - a perfect start to a holiday in Australia for me!

When I arrived back in Britain and reflected on our Australian trip, my thoughts turned to turning 50 and Beyond Blue and Mind - the UK charity sprang to mind and I thought 'What the hell - I'll raise some funds and awareness for them'.

I'll regularly post blogs here so you can keep updated on my training and amusing anecdotes from my progress.  I'd really appreciate it if you can sponsor me and help me raise my targets - and also share this with friends and family.  These charities both do incredible work in my temporary home of the UK and my home land of Australia.

I'll also add a sporting clip/information that I've either seen or remember well from over the years.  The very first one is what's inspired me for is here:

Do It Again Tom!!

Go Cats!!!!!!!
